Kenya Safari - Lion

Spring is a great time for this 12-day safari to Africa. This is the calving and nesting season; pasture is abundant and animal concentrations are at their highest. You are sure to see newborn elephants, baboons, zebras and gazelles as you tour through 5 National parks. Bring your camera and you’ll get some amazing photos.

Day 1 Overnight flight to Kenya
We depart on Monday night and arrive in Nairobi the next day in the early evening, where you will be transferred to the EKA Nairobi. While traveling through Kenya and the game parks, safari vans with raised roofs and it is our intent to have a maximum of 6 passengers per vehicle. Meals Served in flight.

Day 2: Arrive: Nairobi City
Accommodation: EKA Hotel Nairobi
Activity: Airport Arrival – Meet, Greet & Assist, transfer to hotel.

The trip to Kenya can have its moments – airports, crowds, lines, luggage, and irritating snafus. But once you arrive in Nairobi, Safari Capital of the World, everything changes. A smiling happy face greets and welcomes you to Kenya. You’re welcomed, assisted and transferred to the Nairobi EKA Hotel. We will arrive in Nairobi about 9:15 PM in the evening; many will want a hot shower and a bed others will want to have a bight to eat. We will provide light snack items in your room. Meal Plan: Meals served in flight.

Day 3: Amboseli National Park
Accommodation: Amboseli Sopa Lodge
Activity: Transfer to Amboseli. Afternoon Game Drive

After breakfast we depart for Amboseli National Park where Mount Kilimanjaro provides a dramatic backdrop as it rises almost 20,000 feet above the plain. Amboseli boasts a variety of ecosystems – marshland, scrubby plain, and acacia woodlands – supporting a diverse range of wildlife. Following lunch, spend the afternoon viewing elephants, giraffes, ostrich, gazelles, baboons, monkeys and many more animals. In late May after the rainy season food is abundant for the animals and this is the season of calving. You are sure to see newborn elephants, baboons, zebras and gazelles today. Before entering the park you will find local vendors with inexpensive souvenirs. Please remember that bargaining is part of the culture, never pay more than 1/3 the asking price from local vendors or curio shops Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 4: Amboseli National Park

Activity: Morning and Afternoon Game Drives

Today features morning and afternoon game drives where you are likely to spot wildebeest and zebra attracted to the marshes and swamps fed by the melting snows of Kilimanjaro. On a Tye’s Tour we don’t leave at the crack of dawn like many of our competitors. Our game drives will be scheduled to start at 8 AM unless you are on a photo tour designed to catch specific lighting conditions. You may also spot white rhinos on the fringes of the marshes as well as a great variety of bird life (some 425 species of bird populate the park). With Kilimanjaro providing a dramatic backdrop, your photographs will be stunning. In late May expect the temperature to be about 70 –75 during the day. Today we will have a box lunch to enjoy in the park avoiding having to return to the lodge for lunch. We will also include a visit to a Masai Village where you can learn about the local people and culture. We encourage all of our guests to bring school supplies for the kids as pens and paper are often difficult and expensive to obtain. For $30 you can buy a child a school uniform, which each child must obtain in order to attend school.

Day 5: Sweetwater’s Wildlife Sanctuary
Accommodation: Sweetwater’s Tented Camp
Activity: Transfer to Sweetwater’s Wildlife Sanctuary Private Game Park.

We continue our exploration with a scenic drive north through coffee, pineapple and tea plantations of central Kenya we will enjoy lunch on the way to the Sweet Waters Wildlife Sanctuary. This is a beautiful private game reserve and home to rare species such as Beisa oryx, Rothschild’s giraffe and black rhino. Game drives here reveal the full range of African wildlife including lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant and hippo. Tonight we will feature a night game drive where you will be able to observe the nocturnal wildlife Don’t be afraid of a tented camp as they are virtual hotel rooms with canvas walls. All rooms have electricity and private bathrooms with showers. Tonight we will feature a nocturnal game drive. In order to photograph animals in the dark we suggest you bring an LED Flashlight with a 300 lumen beam (we will have these lights available at discount prices and can be purchased on line for as little as $10. Day 6: Sweet water wildlife Sanctuary
Accommodation: Sweetwater’s Tented Camp
Activities: Game Drive Chimpanzee sanctuary feed a rhino.

Enjoy a private visit with the tame animals at the wildlife orphanage. Observe chimps from the Jane Goodall Institute at the Sweetwater’s Chimpanzee Sanctuary. When we visit the Chimpanzee research center you can adopt a chimp for a year for as little as $25. When you read the horror stories of these chimps almost everyone wants to adopt an animal. We encourage all of our guests to contribute to the aid in the research and preservation of these animals with the adoption program (visa and master card gladly accepted) In the afternoon watch the animals come to you as they come for a drink at Sweetwater. A perfect time for the photographer to wait for the photo opportunity and take that amazing shot. Don’t be surprised to see Giraffe, Storks, rhinos, gazelles, wart hogs and many other animals coming down for a drink. Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 7: Lake Nukuru
Accommodation: Sarova Lion Hill
Activity: Afternoon game drives

This morning we will cross the equator and head south arriving at Lake Nukuru in time for lunch. In the afternoon we will cruise Lake Naivasha in search of Hippos, birdlife and Eagles. We will return to the lodge with time for you to go for a swim or relax in the lodge. Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 8: Lake Nakuru Park
Accommodations: Sarova Lion Hill
Activities: Morning and afternoon game drive

This morning we will look for the wildlife of Nakuru National Park. In the afternoon we will do a second game drive. Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 9: Masai Mara National Reserve
Accommodation: Mara Sopa Game Lodge
Activity: Transfer to Masai Mara. Afternoon game Drive

This remarkable day takes you to the Masai Mara Reserve and into the domain of the Masai, Kenya’s cattle-herding nomads determined to preserve their traditions. The Mara is magnificent, home to Kenya’s richest concentration of wildlife, and regarded by many travelers as an essential stop on any tour of Africa. When westerners think of Africa and safari, this is place they imagine – golden grassland plains pocked with acacia, wildebeests, zebras, lions, and jackals bound by together by the cycle of life and death.. Day 10: Masai Mara National Reserve
Accommodation: Mara Sopa Game Lodge
Activity: 2 Game drives
Morning and afternoon game drives will lead you to some of Africa’s largest lion prides, herds of zebra, antelopes, buffaloes, wildebeest, giraffes, cheetahs, and hyenas. Accommodations include en suite restroom facilities and secluded verandahs. In between game drives, lounge at the pool or bar, or enjoy a mid-day nap. For those that want to have a second cultural encounter we will visit another Masai Village. Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 11: Masai Mara – Nairobi City

After Breakfast a morning game drive before departure. After our game drive we will head to Nairobi and enjoy a boxed lunch in route. Before being transferred to the airport we will visit the giraffe center in Nairobi where you have the opportunity to feed the giraffes. Optional flights from Masai Mara to Nairobi are available.
